History: Nana was born the illegitimate daughter of Misuzu Osaki, who left Nana in the care of her grandmother when she was four years old. Nana has not seen her mother since, and has forgotten what she looks like. Nana's grandmother was very strict, and forbade her from wearing the pink or red because she didn't want Nana to "tempt" men and become like her mother.
But Nana had something of a rebellious streak. In high school, she never had friends until she met Nobuo Terashima, who introduced her to punk music and bands like as The Sex Pistols. Then at some point, she was falsely accused of prostitution and was expelled when she didn't bother to deny it. She soon came to regret her decision, as she believes the accusations led to her grandmother's fatal illness. However, after her grandmother's death, Nana bought her first red dress for herself as a Christmas present.
Nana wore the dress to a punk concert with Nobu, where she first laid eyes on Ren Honjo. Nana was instantly captivated by him, and accepted Ren's offer when he asked her to join the band he was starting with Nobu and their
friend Yasu.
As the lead singer of the band Black Stones (Blast, for short), Nana gained a rabid following of fans in her hometown. She developed a typically "cool" appearance, wearing the punk fashions of Vivienne Westwood and getting a lotus tattoo on her arm. She moved in with Ren into his warehouse loft just before her seventeenth birthday, after the two had been dating for about a year. The two of them shared an intense romance for a year and three months until Ren told her that spring that he had been offered a big record deal and would be leaving Blast to play with the band Trapnest in Tokyo. Though still in love, they believed that a long distance relationship would be pointless, and she proudly refused to abandon her own musical career to follow Ren.
Determined to "polish the shards of her dreams" and become a successful musician, Nana moved to Tokyo and re-formed Blast with Nobu, Yasu, and a new bassist, Shin. She also befriended Nana Komatsu, a kind-hearted but
scatter-brained girl who, like Nana Osaki, wished to fulfill her dreams in Tokyo. The two Nanas shared an apartment and became quite close despite their differences. Nana gave Nana Komatsu the nickname "Hachi," which was adopted by their mutual friends. Nana also became fiercely protective of Hachi, going so far as to physically threaten Hachi's cheating boyfriend, Shoji. But, Nana was also a little possessive of Hachi, and would feel jealous when anyone appeared to be taking "her" Hachi away.
Hachi helped bring Nana and Ren back together inviting her to go to a Trapnest concert. At first Nana turned her down, but eventually gave in and agreed to go. For the first time in two years, Nana saw Ren in person. Ren saw her too, and they rekindled their romance that night. Nana thanked Hachi by introducing her to Trapnest's bassist, Takumi. However, Takumi's cold, playboy personality put doubts in Nana's mind, and she wondered if he was suitable for her friend.
It soon became clear, however, that while they were separated, Ren and Nana grew apart despite the fact that they were still in love. When they dated before, Ren and Nana shared secrets and talked with one another; but Nana no longer confided in Ren as much. This fact worried her because whenever she had a problem, the person she would turn to is Yasu, who would rushe to her side no matter the time or place. Her trust in Yasu is perhaps because throughout all the years, Yasu remained an unending source of strength and a pillar of support for her, while Ren was more like her mother, who abandoned her, and left her behind to pursue his own dreams. Some part of her had never forgiven Ren for it.
After a while, Blast got a record deal at Gaia Records and was quickly thrust into the public spotlight. Nana has trouble coping with the paparazzi, especially when tabloids print stories about Ren's possible affairs and probe into the location of her mother. Though Ren proposed to Nana and asks her to move in with him, their relationship was often volatile and
Nana would wonder if it would last. Then she felt Hachi slipping away, since she moved in with her husband, Takumi, and rarely saw her anymore. Nana saw Trapnest as her enemy, since Ren abandoned her for their band, Ren seemed to be taken by Reira's singing, and Hachi often chose Takumi over her.
Later, Search magazine revealed that Nana's mother is actually alive. It turns out that Nana's mother had actually maintained a fairly normal lifestyle and even had another daughter, Misato Uehara. Misato has an incredible likeness to Nana, and when she found out that her mother had abandoned her idol, she flees in shock and disappointment.
Then Shin was caught with someone in possession of marijuana, and Blast was unable to perform their concert tours. Nana asked Ren to play in his place, but because of his own drug addiction and his conflicting feelings about Nana's pride, he refused to play for Blast and Nana feels betrayed. Since Shin's arrest forced Blast to go on hiatus, Gaia offered Nana a solo contract. Ren wanted to try to quit drug addiction before making up with Nana. Before going to meet Nana for her birthday, he went to pick up Reira for Trapnest. But on the way, he winds up crashing his car and dying.
Nana was in Osaka to prepare for her solo career when Yasu told her that Ren has died, and they have to travel to their hometown for his funeral. Although she went, she became catatonic and was unable to speak during the ceremony. After the procession, Ren's manager brings in a birthday present from Ren that was found in his belongings gives it to Nana, who has never opened it.
Nana has started getting panic attacks due to stressful situations, causing her to have trouble breathing. She usually uses a paper bag to breathe into to remedy them.
With everything falling apart, Nana disappeared and cut off contact with everyone she's ever known. She's currently running from one place to another. Joining bands briefly or performing solo at bars and clubs, singing and playing a guitar. But as soon as she feels that she's becoming too well known, however, she flees. Search magazine caught up with her once, when she was at a pub in England, and she's determined not to let it happen again.
She still wears the engagement ring Ren gave her, and can't seem to give it up. It often reminds her of a conversation she had with Ren where she asked him that if she died, if he would die with her. He told her he would. At times, she feels guilty that she has not done the same. Looking at the ring and thinking of Ren drives her into depressive states, but she's not ready to let it go. And in some ways, she feels it helps guard her from other things she's not prepared for.
